i'm in the basement, thinkin' 'bout the government

It's lovely here.

That is the view from the front of the house. I wish my camera could better capture the beauty of the tall mountains in the background. It catches my breath every time.

Things are going well here. I've been meeting a lot of people. My host family is pretty spectacular. Kim and Mike are laid back and welcoming. Yesterday Kim and I browsed the local (and deliciously wonderful) coffee/book shop in town. The owner, Sean, was quite engaging and told me that even though they have a small physical collection, he will pretty much order anything I also had an amazing chai frappe.

I ate dinner with Kim and Mike and the kids last night. Ben, Charlotte, and Piper are quite wonderful. Watching an almost two year old eat both "pasgetti" and "choco cake" was hilarious. Somehow, Piper had chocolate cake on her toes. Which she then tried to eat with her fork.

Last night, after the kids went to bed, I went with Kim and Mike to a local Irish pub called McKinney's. They had a DJ night themed on the gay bar scene in Vancouver in the late 80s/early 90s. The costumes people showed up in were both disturbing and great. The flyer said goth was the preferred attire, but many just got as 80s as possible. I'll admit, I wrote lots of black eyeliner and black clothes with lots of Madonna-esque jewelery. Mike put in fake piercings, white makeup, and black eyes/lips. Kim had this crazy black wig, long witch-type black dress and tall 80s boots.

I really appreciate my host family.

Tonight is a barbecue in my honor with the site team and consistory. Apparently, we will be eating fresh grilled salmon and oysters. I cannot wait. I mean, fresh salmon and oysters?!

Tomorrow is the first Sunday. I think I am ready. My sermon is done, the service is planned, the praise team has rehearsed, and I pretty much can't do anything else to get ready.
